GENERAL INFORMATION

Azerbaijan Technical University is an important research and educational center founded in 1920 and presently meets all the international requirements. Here the highly qualified engineers are trained in 54 specialities in the field of automation and computing techniques, electronics, electrical engineering, metallurgy, machine-building, automototractor-building, automobile and railway transport, business and management, radio-engineering, television and telecommunication as well .

There are 9 faculties and 54 departments in the University with 884 teachers; out of them 13 are full members and corresponding members of Azerbaijan Academy of Science and other academies, 80 professors, doctors of sciences,473 docents, candidates of sciences. More than 50 postgraduates from Azerbaijan and foreign countries perform scientific researches and work over their candidate dissertations in the Aspirantura. The United Scientific Council functions at the University to award scientific degrees in different fields of science .The research institute “Motor Fuels and Environment” works side by side with the University. There is an engineering center “Metallurg”, 13 scientific research laboratories and television center at the University. The “Scientific Proceedings”-the periodical technical journal is published 4 times a year as well as the methodical and educational text -books, monographs about 300-350 printer’s sheets annual.

The University collaborates with specialized organizations of the United Nations, UNESCO, other international organizations and 30 foreign institutions.

Currently more than 6500 students study at the University. They take an active part in chairs’ and research laboratories’ work.

The University provides teachers, postgraduates and students all facilities for successful work. It possesses a scientific library with 700 thousand books in Azerbaijanian, Russian and foreign languages, the Computer Center, Sport complex, Polyclinics, Canteen, Rest-zone on the shore of the Caspian Sea.

The Azerbaijan Telecommunication Training Center, created within the framework of TACIS program of the European Union has been functioning since October 1998 at the Azerbaijan Technical University. The center is equipped with all modern training facilities; the latest computers, projectors and controls, digital automatic telephone station with autonomous electrical power system, up to date welding equipment for optical cables and etc.

Courses for the engineering staff of the Ministry of Communication, firms and enterprises related to the telecommunication systems as well as for the students and postgraduates of the University have been organized and conducted in the following directions: Principles of Digital Commutation, Digital systems of communication (System X, DMS, DRX-4, System - 12), Modern telecommunication technologies, Principles of Digital electronics, Design of telecommunication nets, management, business, international accountancy and etc., by the teaching staff of the Azerbaijan Technical University and highly qualified workers of the Ministry of Communication and Economics, who were on long term probation in the Telecommunication Centers of Great Britain and Ireland.

The representatives of 40 countries graduated from the University and Aspirantura. Four hundred foreign students train here. In the special Preparatory School students may improve their language and educational knowledge.

The University keeps constant contacts with higher educational institutions and scientific and industrial enterprises of USA, Russia, Turkey, Germany, England, France, Islamic republic of Iran, Canada, China, Austria, Poland, Malaysia, Georgia, Turkmenistan and others.

The training of bachelors is carried out during 4 years (including 9 months of preparatory school for foreigners). The Study at the Magistrate lasts for 2 years and the Aspirantura for 3-4 years.

The Faculty of Automation and Computing Equipment.

The faculty trains the engineers in the following specialities: “Computing machines , complexes, systems and nets”, “Computing mathematics”, ”Automation of technological processes and manufacture”, “Robototechnical systems and complexes”, “Industrial electronics”, “Design and technology of computing appliances”. They work at the plants of microschemes, computing machines, instrument-making, metallurgy and railway transport enterprises.

The faculty consists of the departments: Design and technology of computing appliances, Automation of production processes and robototechnical systems, Industrial electronics, , Computing machines and systems, Mathematics 2, as well as scientific research laboratories - Management of territorially distributed systems, Automated control systems and appliances of machines, robots and technological processes, Mathematical modeling of the Nonsteady processes. The teachers’ staff of the faculty perform research works concerned the problems: systems of optional control, automated planning of computing appliances' units, creation of controlling systems by industrial robots.
 
 

The Faculty of Automechanics.

The faculty trains highly-qualified specialists on “Heat transformers and untraditional and recovering energy sources and installations”, “Refrigerating machines and installations, air-conditioning”, “ Internal combustion engines”, ”Automobiles and tractors”, “Technical exploitation of transport”, “Organization of transportation and control on the transport”, “Organization of road traffic”. The graduates of the faculty work in the fields of design manufacture, exploitation and maintenance of autotractors, engines, refrigerators, conditioners as well as at scientific- research and educational enterprises.

The faculty includes the following departments: Internal combustion engines and autotractors, Autotransports means, Automobile transportation and organization of road traffic, Thermotechnics and thermal machines, Refrigerating machines, Theoretical mechanics, scientific-research institute “Motor Fuels and Environment”, scientific - research laboratory “Automobile engines with the stratified charge”.

The research work is carried out at the faculty on the directions: Increasing of Efficiency of Internal combustion engines and refrigerating machines, Research of thermodynamical and hydrodynamic properties of liquids and gases, Improvement of automobile transportation and road traffic, Organization of service of autotransport, Solution of complex problems in oil-refining technologies.
 
 

The Faculty of Railway Transport

The training of specialists is carried out on the following specialities: “Railway and its exploitation”, ”Locomotives and tracks industry”, “Automatics, telemechanics and communication on the railway transport”, “Technology and reconstruction equipment and increasing of strength of machine parts and appliances”. Professors and teachers work at the departments Exploitation of the railway transport, Automatics, telemechanics and communication on the railway transport, Strength of materials. The scientific-research laboratory Progressive Technology functions at the faculty. The research work is concerned the problems: General directions of economical, scientific and technical as well as the social development of railway transport of Azerbaijan Republic, Scientific foundations of technological guarantee of resources and safety of machines and units, Mechanics of deformation of solid state.

The Faculty of Electric and Telecommunication Engineering.

The faculty trains engineers on “Communication nodes and Switchiny systems”, “Multichannel telecommunication systems”, “Nets, Systems of communication and information processing, “Electric isolation, cable and condensation techniques” “Electric transport,” ”Electric equipment of automobiles and tractors.” The graduates of the faculty work at the enterprises of electric engineering and energetic industries, enterprises of the Ministry of Communication, on the electric transport in the underground, in the research and educational institutions.

The faculty scientific workers perform educational work and researches at the departments Electric communication, Electric isolating materials and cabal equipment, Automatic electrocommunication, Information Nets and Systems, General Electrotechnics, as well as at the laboratories, Telecommunication Training Centre and branches created at Baku association of telephone communication of Ministry of communication and Academy of science of Azerbaijan. They work over the problem The research Parameters Devices, Systems and Sets Electrocommunication.
 
 

The Faculty of Machine-Building

The faculty is the largest one in the University and trains the engineers on "Technology of machine-building", "Metal-cutting machines and tools", “Systems of automatically design in machine-building”, “Hydraulic machines”. The graduates of the faculty work successfully at oil machine-building plants and electric machine-building plants, machine-tool, tool-making enterprises as well as transport and design offices.

There are following departments: Technology of machine-building, Metal-cutting machines and tools, Systems of automatically design, Hydraulic and hydraulic machines, Technology and reliability of repair of machines, Mathematics 1, research laboratory of progressive technologies on the faculty. Faculty comprises many educational laboratories, a work-shop, equipped with the modern machine-tools. The teachers’ staff of the faculty work over the problem : Scientific foundation of technological guarantee of resource and safety of machines and units.
 
 

The Faculty of Technological Machines

The faculty is the newest one at the University and trains engineers in the following specialties: "Hoisting machines and equipment", "Polygraph machines and automated complexes", “Machines of light industries”, "Tool-making", "Metrology and metrological security". They work successfully at the scientific, educational and industrial enterprises of the republic.

The faculty includes the departments Machinery and hoisting machines, Toolmaking and special techniques, Metrology and Standardization, Poligraphic machines, Theory of mechanisms and machines, Engineering drawing, scientific-research laboratories of Bioengineering, of Automated design, educational center of Robotized production, where the teachers, and scientific workers of the faculty carry out research works over the problem of design of mechanical systems. Azerbaijan Committee of International Federation of theory of mechanisms and machines functions on the faculty.
 
 


The Faculty of Metallurgy.

For the period of its existence the faculty has trained highly qualified specialists who work in metallurgy and foundry plants and scientific-research and design offices of Azerbaijan and countries of former USSR. The students of the faculty study on "Non-ferrous metallurgy ", "Physical and Chemical researches of metallurgical Processes", "Ferrous and Non -ferrous foundry production", "Powder and compositional Materials and coverings" , "Machines and equipment of foundry production", "Equipment and Technology of Welding Production".

The faculty consists of the departments: Technology of Constructing and powder materials and corrosion, Metallurgy and Metalscience, Foundry and welding production, Industrial Ecology and Safety of vital activity, Chemistry and Physics 1. There is an engineering center Metallurgy and scientific-research laboratories of Polymer Materials, Alicyclic and Mesogenerous Compounds, Powder Materials, Corrosion, Metalscience of the alloys of the highest strength, Higher Temperature Heat Physics where the professors, docents and teachers of the faculty of Metallurgy carry out scientific researches on the following directions: Physical and Chemical Foundation of Perfection Metallurgical Production with purpose of safety and durability increasing of constructive materials as well as the physical and technical Problems of Energetic.
 
 

The Faculty of Business and Management

The formation of Independent Azerbaijan Republic and transition to the Market Economy showed the need for competent engineers trained in management and economics knowledge in the fields of industrial, transport and other enterprises, productions and service. To serve these purposes the faculty of Business and management was created at the University. The training of the engineers and economists is held in the specialities: "Economy and Management of Production fields and services,", "Management".

The faculty consists of the following departments: Economy, organization, planning and management of industrial production, Economy and organization of transport and communication, Theory of Economy, History, Philosophy and Politology. The scientific-research works perform on the: Problems of transition to market economy, Social and political problems of transition period to market economy, The formation’s problems of regulation mechanism of transition period economy in Azerbaijan.
 
 

The Faculty of Radio-Engineering

and Microelectronics

The training of highly qualified engineers at the faculty is carried out in the specialities: “Radio communication, radio broadcasting and television”, “Radio engineering”, “Physics and technology of materials and components of electronic appliances”, “Biotechnical and medical appliances and systems”, “Technical exploitation of radio equipment of transport”. The graduates of the faculty work at the enterprises of radio-engineering profile, service and radio-television centers.

The faculty includes the departments: General and Theoretical Radio Engineering, Television and radiosystems, Microelectronics and applied physics, Theoretical foundations of Electro Engineering, Technical Electrodynamics and installations of highest frequency, as well as the scientific and educational laboratory of television. The scientific-research works at the faculty are connected with the problems of Development the radio-television appliances and systems and Physics and electronics of solid.

The Department of Foreign Students

The training of highly qualified specialists for the foreign countries is carried out through the department functions for the work with foreigners. It makes decisions on the procedures regarding admissions, educational activity, everyday life, leisure time and questions concerning the exit and entry documentation of the foreign students.

For 30 years the representatives of more than 40 nationalities graduated from the University. Currently the citizens of Turkey, Islamic Republic of Iran, Bulgaria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Iordania, Algeria, Libya, Angola, Mali, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Morocco, Kongo, Zaire, Peru, Ecuador, Cuba, Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea study here.

Nearly thousand of highly qualified specialists have graduated from the University. Within the new structure of higher education system on successful completing the Baccalaureate the representatives of many countries were awarded the Magister Degree.

During the study students have the probabiation at the industrial enterprises. The graduates are given the opportunity to enter the Aspirantura after completion of which they are awarded the scientific degree the “Candidate of Science” (Ph.D).

Currently about 400 foreign students are enrolled at the faculties of the University where work highly qualified professors and docents. The training is held in Azerbaijanian and Russian languages at the day time and extramural sections. The University provides accommodation in the hostel for the students. They are enable to visit the library, sport complex and the students’ polyclinic as well. Foreign graduates of the secondary schools may admit the first course of our University. Those foreigners who have completed the high schools or being in the final year are enable to continue their study in the senior courses.

The admission is carried out through the students’ exchange international agreements or on the ground of payment.

The admission of the students on the ground of payment can be made by companies, firms or other associations and through the individual agreements as well.

All foreign students have to go through the Preparatory school which lasts 3 months. The main objective of this school is the learning of Azerbaijanian and Russian languages as well as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Foreign citizens who demonstrate a high proficiency in Azerbaijanian or Russian adequate for degree level studies may be allowed to bypass the preparatory school and enter directly into first year.

For the confession the diplomas they are adviced to keep the rules, function in their countries.

THE TRAINING OF SCIENTIFIC PERSONNEL

The training of the Magisters exercised in 82 specialities on the following 19 directions: Engineering Economics, Automation and control; Telecommunication; Metallurgy; Electronics and Microelectronics; Environment protection; Thermoenergetics; Design and Technology of Electron devices; Electro Engineering, Electromechanics, Electrotechnology; Road Traffic, Device-building, Materialscience and technology of new Materials; Technological Machines and Equipment; Exploitation of Autotransport; Metrology Standardization and Certification; Radio Engineering; Hydropneumo systems, Information and Computing Techniques, Automation, Technology and Equipment of Machine-building industry.

For successive postgraduate studies the Aspirantura and the Doctorantura are available. The Aspirantura trains the candidate of sciences who are equaled by a scientific level to the Philosophy Doctors of the foreign countries.

Holders of the Master Degree who successfully pass the entrance examination are admitted to the Aspirantura which lasts for the period of 3-4 years. During the period of training the postgraduates study humanitarian and special sciences as well as the knowledge of one of the Westeuropean languages. On completing the Aspirantura the postgraduates have to take examinations. Under the guidance of the scientific advisor they prepare the dissertation according to the selected specialty. Those who defend the dissertation at the specialized scientific Council are awarded the scientific degree candidate of science (Ph.D). The candidates of sciences (Ph.D) may work as the docents in high educational institutions, the senior scientific workers in research institutes, chief specialists at the industrial enterprises.

The Ph.D. holders having scientific developments in chosen directions are enable to continue their research in the Doctorantura and on defending Doctor’s thesis acquire the Degree of the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) at the specialized Scientific Council. The Doctors of Science may work as professors, heads of departments, rectors in higher educational institutions, the leading scientific workers as well as the directors of labs and scientific research institutes.
